SEED COLLECTING

Seed collection is a vitally important part of propagating local native plants. It is easy to do and provides many opportunities to discover and explore the local flora and fauna.

Seed collection techniques vary for different species, it is not always as simple as just picking some seeds.

Timing is perhaps the most critical aspect of seed collection. Any seed needs to be collected when it is ripe, but before it is shed by the plant. Return visits to a site are often necessary to ensure an adequate supply of viable seed.

More detailed information is available in "The Flora of Melboune" and "Seed Collection of Australian Plants". Full References are in the Library list.
