Seed Treatment

The seeds of many local plants need treating before they will germinate.

Treatments aim to reproduce the natural events that break seed dormancy. Techniques are being refined constantly by many peoples trial and error.

Seeds with hard outer coatings need to be treated to allow water to penetrate into the embyo.

Wattles, Peas and some Lilies
Boiling water Place seeds in a cup/container

Fill cup with boiling water

Soak for 4-24 hours
Scarification Rub seed with sand paper
Cutting Nick the seed coat with a sharp implement
